5 Smile Saving Tips for Summer Vacation
June 19, 2025

With summer vacation season in full swing, there’s a good chance you may be traveling soon. But while many people create detailed checklists for what to pack before they head out, oral health is often left off the roster. Here’s how you can protect your smile from harm while hitting the road this summer!
Go to the Dentist First
The American Dental Association recommends you receive a dental check-up and cleaning every six months. If it’s been a while since you’ve had one, it’s a smart idea to book it before you book your vacation hotel. This will ensure that not only will your mouth be healthy and clean, but it will afford you the peace of mind you deserve while on vacation. After all, who wants to worry about untreated cavities or a lingering toothache while they’re supposed to be relaxing?
Pack Emergency Numbers
With smartphones being so commonplace these days, it’s pretty easy to have a world of contact information at your fingertips at any given time. But if you’ll be traveling overseas, be sure to have numbers for places like your nearest US Embassy at the ready. This way, should you encounter any service issues or translation problems, you can still easily access emergency information. Embassies are a great place to get referrals to urgent medical and dental care, so be prepared and keep these numbers handy just in case.
Chew Sugarless Gum
When you’re traveling, you may not know when you’ll get the next opportunity to brush your teeth. Keep plaque acid at bay while ensuring your breath is clean by chewing sugarless gum in between meals. That way if you can’t get to a toothbrush until late at night, you won’t have to go a whole day without caring for your smile.
Brush With Bottled Water
Some areas are notorious for having questionable water, especially if it’s not something you’re used to drinking. To be safe, don’t risk consuming local tap water. Instead, only drink and brush with bottled varieties, and keep your mouth closed when showering and swimming, too.
Stick to Your Routine
Vacation means a break from your daily grind. But while it may be perfectly acceptable to ignore your email and put your phone on ‘do not disturb’ don’t let your oral hygiene routine fall by the wayside, too. With all the delicious local cuisine you’ll be trying and travel selfies you’ll be taking, this is definitely not the time to forget your oral hygiene routine! Thus, be sure to make time between all that fun to brush twice a day and floss once a day so you don’t have any unpleasant surprises the next time you visit the dentist!
Remember, you deserve a summer break free of worry. Don’t let oral health problems overshadow your vacation. Follow these important tips and you’ll enjoy the peace of mind to keep smiling all season long!
