Checkup Checklist: 3 Things Your Dentist Looks for Besides Your Teeth
December 11, 2025

When you go to your checkups and cleanings, does it seem like there’s not much going on? These visits help remove plaque and bacteria from your teeth, but there’s a lot happening behind the scenes. Aside from cavities, your dentist is watching for a wide range of other oral health issues! Here are three other things they look for that you might not have realized they kept an eye out for.
1.) Looking for Gum Disease
Your smile is not only your teeth, but also your gums. They help complement these structures, framing them nicely. However, they can be attacked by bacteria as well. When they build up along the gumline, you may end up developing periodontal (gum) disease.
The symptoms of this condition may start minor, or you might think they are just an annoyance, but this condition can turn into a serious issue when left untreated. As it progresses, your gums may start to detach from your teeth, creating pockets. Your dentist will measure these to see if you have developed it. Not only that, but other symptoms you might experience are noticeable redness, swelling, and bleeding when you brush or floss.
2.) Checking Your Tongue and Salivary Glands
Your tongue is another structure that your dentist will look at. It’s a great indicator of various issues through sores, discoloration, and white spots. These can be warning signs of vitamin deficiencies or more serious conditions like oral cancer.
Saliva glands are another important thing to examine. Your saliva is crucial for helping wash away bacteria and remineralizing your enamel. However, when you can’t properly produce enough, then your mouth will become dry. This is a perfect environment for bacteria to build up and cause gum disease and decay.
3.) Watching for Signs of Oral Cancer
Oral cancer may sound like a scary condition to have, but routine visits to your dentist help keep an eye out for it. It’s able to develop in anyone and become life-threatening when left untreated. The symptoms may be minor until you experience serious complications.
Your dentist will look for things that look odd or suspicious, such as red or white patches, rough spots, or lesions that haven’t healed in two weeks. That way, they catch anything while it’s in its early stages and get you the prompt treatment you deserve.
In the end, routine checkups and cleanings are more than just about your teeth and decay. Your provider keeps everything in your mouth in mind while they make sure your smile is problem-free. That way, you stay confident knowing your mouth is in great shape.
